The Olana by Walter Wedding Estates

Hickory Creek, Texas

Challenge:

Inspired by French baroque architecture, The Olana boasts an iconic mansion for weddings and events on an expansive 40-acre estate complimented by its own lake. Known as "the largest house in Texas," it also features a tea room, an indoor and outdoor pool, a tennis court, a bowling alley, a basketball court, expansive private suites, and much more. Unfortunately though, its previous owners had to shut down part of the estate because the energy costs were so high to operate on chilled water. In addition, the chiller wouldn't modulate down at all which then led to diminished levels of comfort on the property. Also, piping started to pit due to lack of maintenance and water leaks began, which threatened to damage the estates extensive artwork and antique collection. Consequently, the new owner wanted a system that could react very quickly to large influxes of people, while still offering the high levels of comfort you'd expect in such an opulent setting. Furthermore, they wanted something expandable to handle the next phase of the estate in the future.

Solution:

The Olana engaged Crawford Services, Inc. who, after an analysis of the facility, believed it was a perfect scenario for a Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) system. The team at Crawford Services collaborated with Shearer Supply, a Samsung wholesale distributor in Dallas, Texas, to propose a design that featured Samsung HVAC's state-of-the-art DVM S Heat Recovery VRF system. "Crawford is a close partner of Shearer Supply and has done many Samsung projects with us. We were very excited that Crawford was asked to take on a project as unique as this. Together, we were able to design a VRF system customized to the layout of the facility," said Brian Bahn Ductless/VRF Product Manager, Shearer Supply.

Together they showed the new owner the energy cost savings and explained that the zoning capabilities of a VRF system would increase comfort levels by allowing users to adjust individual climate settings, making it a wonderful match for The Olana and its numerous amenities. Their plan of action would also eliminate the water problems altogether and the system would be easily expandable down the road. "We're learning that VRF is capable of doing more things than we even realize it's capable of doing and that really helps with client satisfaction," said Tim Buford of Crawford Services, Inc. Buford added, "The new owner wanted quality, longevity, energy efficiency. They're very satisfied." Samsung's DVM S Heat Recovery system delivers heating and cooling with maximum occupant comfort, whether that's for a handful of guests or a few hundred, and it helps the venue in Texas create an incredible atmosphere for every event they hold.
